How to Use Social Media Platforms to Promote Yourself “Like a Boss.”

As a small business owner in 2022, you know you need to ou know you need to promote your professional story on social media.

"Customers want to know who is behind the companies they buy from."

And it's so easy for them to look you up!

Unfortunately, most small business owners are not comfortable promoting themselves online.

"I don't have time for Social Media."

There are so many reasons why we put off building a content platform online:

  • Reason #1 "I don't like talking about myself - my business speaks for me."
  • Reason #2 "I don't want to say the wrong thing. It's easy to get it wrong."
  • Reason #3 "I'm too busy and social media takes too much time."
  • Reason #4 "I don't know which platform to start with, or how to do it."

These reasons do make sense - but it's easier today than it ever has been to promote yourself online. And, trust me, the rewards are there.

Here's how step-by-step:

Step 1: Build your story into a content platform.

Your story is unique, and it's important.

So many business owners undersell their own stories.

It's easy to look at Elon Musk or Tony Robbins with their enormous social media following and assume it's a waste of time starting.

But ask yourself, "How relatable is Elon Musk for your target customer?"

Why you do what you do - your passion - is a story that customers will want to know. So don't hold back anymore. Now is the time to start telling it.

"Building in Public" is something I'll be talking about in upcoming guides. It's okay to talk about what you're doing as you're doing it.

You don't need to wait till you're ready to publish your best-selling business book. Can you teach someone something you learned in the last three months? Or save someone six months with the lessons you have learned through trial and error?

If the answer is yes, then you are ready now to build your valuable content marketing platform.

Step 2: Choose a platform and stick to a daily publishing cadence.

The minute you start, you're a step closer to growing online readers and new potential customers.

Social media platforms are now ingrained in our daily lives. And that's not all bad.

You don't have to jump into TikTok or the next big hype. LinkedIn and YouTube are also huge social media platforms, serving practical purposes for many business people.

The big benefit to social media platforms is the huge audience they have viewing content every moment of the day. And the algorithms are designed to push new content to people who want to know more.

How to use social media to promote yourself.

  1. Pick one primary platform to focus your time on. If you have time, choose a secondary one.
  2. Comment and reply to posts as often as you post yourself. At the start, commenting on other people's posts will gain more traction than your content.
  3. Look for your target audience on your chosen platform and connect with them. Engage in real dialogue. This is where you will learn how you can fit in and add value.
"Promoting yourself online is a habit as much as it is a skill. It's easier to do than you realize".

And it's okay to make mistakes - but avoid negativity. For all the coverage social media gets about abuse and trolling, the majority of followers expect and value positive interactions.

Even if you don't start posting immediately, spend as much time as possible to read, comment, and share on the platform of your choice.

Step 3: Give yourself time and track your results.

"Test and learn" is another thing I talk about on Independent You.

As with most things in life, we learn most from doing. Watching and observing often feels like learning until we start trying ourselves.

I can't stress enough the benefit you will get from diving in and trying things out yourself.

Worried you're not using the right platform? Test your first choice for 30 days by posting twice daily (at least) and commenting on at least five posts.

Not sure what your special topic should be? Update the profile on your preferred platform to reflect your ideas, and start posting. 30 days of writing, commenting, and engaging on what you think your topic should be, will help to confirm that.

And if, in the process, you discover a better approach? What a great investment of your valuable time, right?

It takes practice, but you will improve over time. This is one of the outcomes of posting daily on major social media platforms.

The process I am describing is the fastest way to build an incredibly valuable content platform to promote yourself, your story, and your business.

Don't listen to the hype.

Don't spend more time researching and planning.

Start by commenting on posts related to your niche and specialist topic and posting yourself daily - 2x at least, if you can.

In 30 days, you will be well on the way to building your content marketing platform.
